Engine Dead - help

Postby aminabq » Sun Sep 02, 2012 11:05 am

I have a a 1966 beetle converted to a Baja bug with a 1600 engine. I had been having trouble with the bug starting so I changed the starter. The bug starter great; however, I drove it around the neighborhood for a few minutes and the engine started to make a squeaking sound - almost like a squeaky hinge. I stopped as soon as I could and got it home a very low speed. Now it wont start and it is as if the engine seized. Any opinions?

Is there oil showing on the dip stick?

Can you rotate the engine with a wrench on either the generator nut or the pulley nut with the trans in neutral?

If no to both questions, it's probably seized up. :(

If it turns over by the starter or with a wrench, the squeek is somewhere else.

Perhaps the engine tin beneath the pulley loosened up and is rubbing against the pulley? Mine did this a few weeks ago and it mage the most horrible screeching noise!
