Image Vanagons are my passion. This was my first attempt at a Subaru transplant. I have installed 1.8's normally aspirated, diesel and an Audi A4 1.8T AEB engines in various Vanagons. All were improvements to the lack luster 2.0's, but none perform or fit like the Subaru 2.2 and 2.5 liter applications. As though they were made for it.
This black and white ratrod themed van was my work horse for 11 years. I owned a custom residential door shop in WA state and delivered many a door unit to jobsites via this van. Double doors were set on the driver's side by inserting steel rods into the jack mounts. And placing the door unit atop the rods. It was the perfect set up. I always enjoyed pulling onto a jobsite and watching the workers snicker. Then I pulled an entire house package of doors out of the van, which quickly changed their opinion of the versatility of the Vanagon. DId you know that a Vanagon can receive 14 foot long material inside and still close the rear hatch. That really disturbs the contractor who has the new Ford or Chevy extended van that won't accept 12 foot material without leaving the back doors open. Then you pull out of the jobsite and rip through the first two gears tail wagging as you leave. Quite an impression. Sadly, I sold this van to aid a friend in covering the cost of his wife's cancer treatment. A very good cause! She is 3 years in remission.<p>My next project is a newly acquired 1988 Vanagon Wolfsburg. Soon to be powered by a 2003 Impreza 2.5L. Pics to follow.

Hey ChiliFart,

I'm thinking of putting a Subaru engine into my 87 Vanagon and would like to contact you to find out a bit more.
